Plot Summary
Nick Caraway moves to New York to start his career has a bond salesman. He rents a house in "West Egg", which is in Long Island. Long Island is split between two eggs, East and West. West Egg resembles the "new money" and East Egg resembles "old money". Nick has relations to people in East Egg, his cousin, Daisy and her husband, Tom. He travels over there to share dinner with them and one of their freinds, Jordan Baker. Jordan is a beautiful professional golfer and is begins a relationship with Nick later on. While at the dinner, Nick learns about Tom's mistriss, Myrtle who lives in the Valley of Ashes. They go travel to visit her. Myrtle begins yelling "Daisy" over and over again and Tom gets annoyed and slaps her causing her nose to break. Nick has a mysterious neighbor named Jay Gatsby. He lives in a enormous gothic mansion and throws parties every Saturday night. When Nick returns from the dinner, he sees Gatsby outside reaching his arms toward a green light across from the water. One of Gatsbys servants delivers an invintation to his party. Nick decides to go and runs into Jordan while he's there. They unexpectedly meet Gatsby and learn more about his life. Gatsby shares his love for Daisy with Jordan and tells her Daisy is the reason he throws these ongoing parties. Nick is asked to rearrange a reunion with Daisy and Gatsby. After having tea at Nick's house, an affair with them begin. Tom, Daisys husband begins to get extremely jealous and nosy about the relationship between Gatsby and Daisy even though he is also in an affair. Tom confronts Daisy about the history of Gasby dealing with bootlegging and other illigal acts. As the party leaves to drive home to Long Island, Myrtle is found killed by Gastby's car. Gatsby takes the blame for driving the car. George, Mrytles husband is told that Gatsby was the driver of the car that ran over his wife. George then travels over to Gatsbys house to shoot him while he is in the pool. Nick feels responsible for arranging a funeral for Gatsby, which only a few attend. Nick finally meets Gatsbys dad which informs Nick about his childhood. He then moves back to the midwest, and ends things with Jordan.
